Europe: Day 3: The Black Forest, The Castle Hohenzollern, Ettal

If I remember right,
this was Sunday.
We ate breakfast while enjoying the view:





After breakfast we drove through more of the Black Forest.
It was insanely pretty,
and the fog made it seem SO fairy-tale like!
We could totally picture Hansel and Gretel walking around through this forest completely lost.
haha.

Green fields ALL over.


Okay,
we drove to the Castle Hohenzollern next.
This was hands down Kevin's favorite castle we saw.
It's a privately owned castle by a family of royal German heritage for nearly 1,000 years.
The current owner is around 35 years old (crazy right?!!) and carries the title,
Prince of Prussia.


Look at it just sitting on top of that mountain!


It was like we were watching a movie as we drove up to it.
It was so picturesque! 




(oh look! same hair, same shirt, same jacket....)





This weekend we came,
it happened to be their "Falcon Weekend" where there are eagles and falcons doing a show above the castle.
As part of the weekend,
they open the inner chambers of the castle, which are normally off limits.




We got to tour this castle without a guide (which was actually nice-and remember, we had Dustin, who basically knew everything anyways).
The guys really liked the capes you could wear...
They really liked acting things out too.






How would you like to wake up to this view every morning?





There was still a ton of the castle we didn't get to see (because it was closed off to the public),
but this was actually the castle we were able to see most of,
our entire trip.

After the castle we grabbed lunch.
Dustin introduced us to these Turkish things called  Doner Kebaps.


Freaking good and freaking huge.
Our next stop was Ettal.
I. LOVED. THIS. PLACE.


It may have had something to do with our bags arriving?
bahaha.
But seriously.
Kerr and I were happy to not have to share/borrow Ang and Alissa's stuff any more!
The hotel name was Alphotel Ettal:


The service was super nice everywhere,
but we really liked the front desk lady here.
(maybe because she was from the US? haha)


We still had daylight so we walked around and went to the Ettal Abby.
Originally built in 1330,
and then rebuilt after a fire in 1744.
Monks still live here and give tours,
they also have their own brewery (hah!), distillery, and cheese factory at the monestary.
Kinda crazy.


What was actually crazy,
was that when we were standing inside looking around at the ornate...everything,
we started to hear chanting.
And then the chanting/singing got louder,
and a little door off the side of the room opened up,
and a monks began coming out!
I guess it was their evening service we happened to be there for.


We ate dinner at a restaurant in town (more spaetzle anyone?),
then went back to the hotel.
